The Importance of Shopping Small

I'm not actually sure when I became fully passionate about fashion and style.

A lot of people can pinpoint the exact moment, but I don't really know.

Whenever I did have that realization, there were only two things I cared about when I went shopping--getting the lowest price and following trends. The combination of those two factors has produced and perpetuated the "fast fashion" mentality, as seen in chain stores such as Primark, Forever 21, Charlotte Russe, etc.

I was a devout follower of "fast fashion." I kept buying, then wanting to buy even more after. It was like nothing was ever enough.

Then something changed. I learned more about the environmental impacts of the fashion industry. What it means to be an ethically conscious brand in production, distribution, and consumption. Fair trade. How certain color dyes and fabrics can be carcinogenic. Organic cotton and, more specifically, organic bamboo and hemp fabrics, are more sustainable than conventionally grown cotton.

In general, shopping local is more environmentally friendly practice--The Huffington Post and ELocal lay it out--but the most important thing about supporting local businesses is that it supports the entire community both economically and spiritually. When I say "spiritually," I'm referring to shopping local as a way to strengthen ties between businesses, friends, and neighbors in the community.

So, what's the connect between fashion and shopping local?

Time and time again, many designers have pointed out that fashion and style are two different things--just search "fashion quotes" on Pinterest and you'll see. Fashion is for people obsessed with constant consuming to conform. Fashion can easily lead to mindless excess. Fashion is superficial.

Style, though, is a mindset, a more wholesome approach living.

It is entirely possible to balance fashion and style--it's just important to know the difference. By incorporating the "shop small" mentality in your consumption of clothing and accessories, it heightens both your sense of style and sense of community--this is what I've done and I notice the difference in the way I think about fashion.

I buy less. I visit designer consignment shops and have come to appreciate vintage. I've gotten to know boutique owners and have met great people.

I will be honest--I do still shop at H&M and Forever 21 on the rare occasion. Why? Because I'm a twenty-something on an entry-level salary with rent and student loan payments. As much I would love to shop local all of the time, sometimes I just can't. It's a joke that I live a Whole Foods lifestyle on an Ocean State Job Lot budget...

Making the effort to shop local--whether its at designer consignment boutique or fresh fruits and vegetables at the farmer's market--makes a difference. Choosing to invest in your community is the best way to build a better future and be a conscious consumer.

It's great to have a sense of style, but knowledge is always in fashion.

Find of the Week | 23

I didn't go out on Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, but I made up for it on Sunday...

Shopping on Sunday actually works out, because most businesses end up extending their sales from Black Friday or Small Business Saturday through the weekend and the craziness dies down. I shopped small at The Apothecary Newport, Kristina Richards Studio, and Maison DNA, then went to Gap and Jack Wills for chain stores. Here are the goodies I scored on my mini shopping spree...

I needed a new laptop case--there's actually a cute strapless dress in the same print.

I've been looking for new heels to wear to do double-duty at the office and after-hours. Now that Kristina Richards Studio has turned her Newport location as an outlet store for the winter, I had to stop in and see what shoes were on sale...

The Apothecary Newport had a lot of great deals going on throughout the weekend, including discounts on a several popular skincare and makeup lines, as well as specials on gift cards. I picked up a new perfume and took advantage of two gift card offers.

I had intended to only pick up one pair of pants at Gap, but I ended up stocking up on dress socks and also bought a scarf. I bought a similar scarf last year and wore it death--I plan on doing the same with the new one.

My two favorite things that I bought today are from Maison DNA, the vintage shop on Spring Street. I bought a vintage Pierre Cardin wallet and a vintage navy cable knit sweater that was made in Ireland for Deauville, France. A picture of the sweater on the ground doesn't do it justice, so I found a picture of a new cardigan that follows a similar concept...

Newport/Narragansett: Thanksgiving and Small Business Saturday Haul

My family and I had a great Thanksgiving--all I have to say is that our fridge is filled with leftovers and pies. My cousin and her son joined us for dinner, and we were happy to have them.

We saw Lincoln (2012) in the evening. It was a good film, but it would have been nice to watch it at home to pause, then search the names of the political figures mentioned with the phone or laptop, since not everyone knows the historical importance of Senator WhatsHisFace from that state or the other senators...

Daniel Day-Lewis animated President Lincoln well, as Sally Field performed First Lady Molly Lincoln well. It goes without saying that Tommy Lee Jones, who played Senator Thaddeus Stevens of Pennsylvania, a radical Republican (again, that's just one instance where having my laptop open would have been convenient).

Thursday's Outfit

Surprisingly, we did not participate in Black Friday. Instead, we visited family and relaxed at home. I was still dying to indulge my shopping fix, so I convinced my parents to spend today, Small Business Saturday, in Newport.

We had breakfast at The Hungry Monkey and then walked up and down Brick Market Place. My eldest brother bought jeans at Express, my mom bought texting gloves at Helly Hansen, my dad bought slippers at Rockport, and my second eldest brother and I bought clothes at Jack Wills. We didn't spend as much time, or visit as many stores as I would have liked, but we still had fun and scored some nice deals.

The Haul

I didn't go crazy yet since I am still going to the Jack Wills Christmas Party this Friday, but here is what I am getting for Christmas from Santa:

My eldest brother wanted luggage for Christmas, so we drove the Samsonite factory in Warren. I knew of an internship available in Warren with Grace Ormonde Wedding Style Magazine--it turns out it shares the same building as the Samsonite factory. After successfully picking out a black "compressive" rolling duffle, we went home, watched a Downton Abbey marathon on PBS and decorated the tree.

Shopping Green/Local/Fair Trade for Christmas 2012

Last year, I wrote a Christmas wish list that had nothing to do with local, Fair Trade, or green shopping whatsoever. This year, I hope to shop only local and/or green for the holidays and beyond.

To be honest, I have been refraining from shopping at clothing chain stores. I have browsed through so many stores during the semester, but I cannot bring myself to buy them because I don't know if I can trust their ethical practices in their clothing production. The only place where I have bought clothing in recent months is Wish Newport, the designer consignment boutique downtown.

With Black Friday and Small Business Saturday a few days away, here is my shopping plan for the weekend:

Crosswynds TradersNarragansett, RI (local)- I haven't been in here for a while, but I will definitely want to look at their selection of Lucky Brand, Juicy Couture, and Urban Outfitters.

Green Envy Boutique, Newport, RI (local/green/Fair Trade)- This is where I plan on getting "smalls"--jewelry, tea, etc--for friends' gifts. Also, guilt-free shopping because it's an entirely sustainable boutique.

Wish Newport, Newport RI - Obviously.

Laura Jean Denim Shop, Newport, RI (local) - When I went in last week, there were beautiful cashmere sweaters, the cutest Frye boots, and the oh-so-perfect pairs of J Brand jeans. I plan on spending paycheck here on a cashmere sweater or a couple pairs of leggings. It will be so worth it.

Island Books, Newport, RI (local)- Picking out some new reads for my relatives and little cousins would be great. Probably my favorite bookstore.

Jack Wills, Newport, RI (green-ish)- I know they are technically a chain store, but they are a foundation member of the Ethical Trade Initiative, which makes me feel better shopping there... Also planning on spending a full paycheck here as well...

Renee Bowers of the Fair Trade Federation, whom I interviewed for my journalism assignment on Fair Trade, referred me to a holiday gift guide assembled by the Fair Trade Federation, which contains all sorts of beautiful Fair Trade certified products to give this season. The gift guide has categories ranging from home decor, women's apparel, bath and body and more.

Some of the brands are very familiar--Guayaki Yerba Mate is listed with its mate gourd; Equal Exchange is listed with its organic spicy hot chocolate; One Mango Tree is listed with its hand-loomed scarves; and Dr. Bronner is listed with its organic body care products.

Other products listed include an eco-leather briefcase by Jolica, raw shea butter by Ojoba Collective and Gone Global Cruelty-Free Leather iPad Case by Handmade Expressions.

Green America also has a green holiday gift guide, which can be accessed by clicking here.

I hope that you consider shopping green this holiday season!
