The Lotos Club

My alma mater hosted a beautiful alumni reception at The Lotos Club on East 66th and Fifth Avenue last week.

I didn't really take photos. Even if I had, I doubt that the photos would have done the elegant setting justice. I only wish that I captured the evening cocktail—appropriately named "The Vanderbilt," it mixed together a holy trinity of champagne, pomegranate and St. Germain.

Founded in 1870, The Lotos Club gets its name from Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem, "The Lotos Eaters." The private club is held in high regard for its devotion to the arts and intellectual finesse, accompanied by elegant functions and lavish State dinners.

According to The Lotos Club's history, it is one of the older literary clubs in the United States—it's mission is founded on a more inclusive philosophy, something that certainly stands out amongst an elite neighborhood and its exclusive premise. Notable members include Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain),  President William Howard Taft and a number of Nobel Laureates, political figures, historians and artists.

The Lotos Club is a part of an elegant list of reciprocal clubs—both domestic and international—such as the Hope Club in Providence, Rhode Island; the University Club in San Francisco, California; Le Cercle de l'Union Interalliee in Paris, France; and Sallskapet in Stockholm, Sweden.

BXL Zoute

A Belgian outpost in New York's Flatiron District

My brother Dylan and I planned to meet for lunch in the city, but didn't decide where until the morning of.

"Have you ever been to the Belgian place?"

You know your brother knows his francophile sister when he suggests "the Belgian place" a few blocks away from his office.

BXL Zoute stands proudly on West 23rd Street like a carefully tended floral garden in the middle of concrete jungle. Its interior boasts a polished urban aesthetic with relaxed, European charm. The soft teal and bark color scheme, as well as the wave art spanning across the bar, evokes a longing for the coast (Biarritz, perhaps?).

Dylan and I chose a table outside and decided to order the moules frites prix-fixe for $17 each. There are several options for the lunch prix-fixe and I would be surprised to find a more simply decadent mid-day meal for under $20 in Flatiron.

Although, my friend Cara's brunch spot in Spanish Harlem might come close...

CMA Spring National College Media Convention

It's hard to get enough of New York City, because she's like Christmas morning--no matter how many times you experience it, the excitement never dies.

Student newspapers from across the country at CMA NYC conference

Spending this weekend at CMA's Spring National College Media Convention in New York City was amazing. Combined with the Women's Travel Fest workshop I attended on Sunday, I learned so many tips and tricks from media professionals about blogging, freelancing and pitching in less than a week. The CMA NYC conference was aimed towards university student newspaper editors and aspiring writers who want to improve their content and their reach on their campuses.

I live-tweeted some sessions and posted the tweets on Storify:

One of my favorite parts of the conference was attending a tour inside of The New York Times building. We learned about the architecture, the Pulitzer Hall, and an overall history of the newspaper. Renzo Piano, the architect who designed The New York Times building located at 620 8th Avenue, also designed the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, France with fellow Italian architect Gianfranco Franchini.

I have wanted to get this picture for so long and I am so happy I finally had to the time to take it

Before leaving New York City, I could not leave without making one last stop...

Normandy sandwich: brie, apples, French mustard, raisins, lettuce

Hopelessly and happily addicted and I don't care who knows it

This was one of the best weekends I've had in the city...

It turns out I'll be back in the city sooner than I thought--the university student newspaper staff will be visiting the MoMa in a week. I can't wait for my next box of macarons...

Women's Travel Fest: How to Work Digitally & Travel the World

If you're in need of inspiration, motivation, rejuvenation, you need to be in the city. My brother Adam and I went to New York City for the day--I went to the Women's Travel Fest workshop on W. 26th Street, while Adam met up with our brother Dylan on Broadway.

Of course Paris is my ideal city, but New York City will always be my first urban love. New York City will always be The City

The Women's Travel Fest workshop was well worth attending. I live-tweeted the entire day, so if you want to learn all of the tips and tricks of travel writing from the experts, they're all bundled together in one Storify

The studio where the workshop was held had a nice view of The High Line. It was a perfect day to be out and about and enjoy New York City

Dylan's quartet, For The Times, was recognized today at a Voices of Gotham event for being an up and coming quartet!

Dylan, Adam and I grabbed a quick bite before heading our separate ways. It was an awesome day and I'm excited to be back in the city for the Spring National College Media Convention later this week.

Christmas in the West Village

"City sidewalks, busy sidewalks,
Dressed in holiday style
In the air,
there's a feeling of Christmas"

My family has always spent Christmas at home, but this year, we decided to eat our Christmas meal in New York City--La Ripaille in the West Village. Because my brothers and I are older, it was nice change to celebrate the holiday. On a more selfish note, I couldn't have asked for a better way to get into a Parisian state of mind before I leave on January 5th...

La Ripaille had created a special menu for Christmas. We ordered scallops and lobster ravioli for appetizers, and each of us ordered a perfectly portioned, perfectly prepared entree. Mom ordered vegetable risotto; Dad ordered red snapper; Adam ordered chicken; Dylan ordered steak; and I ordered salmon. For drinks, Dylan and Adam ordered prosecco, but I stuck with my tried and true glass of chardonnay.

Unfortunately, I forgot to write down the full French names of all of the dishes that truly convey how delicious the food was...

Scallops
Lobster Ravioli
The family's entrees
Grilled Salmon in Champagne Reduction
For dessert, Mom and Dylan ordered chocolate mousse and I ordered the bouche de Noel. We all drank caffeine in some form--Mom got tea, Adam chose espresso, Dylan ordered regular coffee, Dad and I ordered cappuccinos.

From left: me, Dylan and Adam
We all had a great time at La Ripaille--my mom is already talking about going back for Easter.

I can't even imagine what it's like to live in the West Village--all I know is that it must be amazing

After dinner, we walked a few blocks down to The High Line. Walking The High Line has been on my list for a while, so even though we barely walked a block on it, I'm happy to say I finally saw it.

Outfit: Jacket, Marc by Andrew Marc (bought at Laura Jean Denim Shop); Scarf, vintage; Shirt, Jack Wills; Pants, Lucky Brand (bought at Crosswynds Traders); Heels, Nine West; Purse, (bought at Elle G); Gloves, (a gift from Ryan)
Merry Christmas / Joyeux Noël!
