The Coronet

Last night, Newport Interactive Marketers' held its monthly talk at the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) on lower Thames Street. I've walked by it several times to go to Gary's Handy Lunch or Aqua boutique across the street, but I never paid attention to the huge warehouse before.

The IYRS has been around since 1993 and it is dedicated to keeping the craft of boat building alive. The school has three schools based in Newport and Bristol:  School of Boatbuilding & Restoration, School of Marine Systems, and School of Composites Technology.

One of the IYRS projects is the restoration of the last turn-of-the-century schooner in existence: Coronet.

Here is a brief description of the Coronet from the International Yacht Restoration School:
Coronet was first launched in 1885, and was one of the most elegant sailing yachts of her day. She was designed for crossing the ocean in style, and featured a marble staircase, stained glass doors, mahogany paneled staterooms, and a piano in the main salon. Since 1995, Coronet has been on the campus of the IYRS, awaiting restoration. Coronet Restoration Partners purchased her in 2006, and restoration has now begun in earnest.
Before Newport Interactive Marketers' talk began, I looked at Coronet, which is housed in a separate warehouse behind IYRS. It's huge. Coronet has been restored by hand for the past ten years and is projected to finish in three to five years.

NPT: Newport Restaurant Week

It's that time of year again--Newport Restaurant Week!

This year, Newport Restaurant Week ran from April 5-April 14. I was happy to catch the very last day with my best friend and have dinner at The White Horse Tavern, the oldest tavern in the United States. We had the most amazing meal...

But before ending the day with dinner, we spent the day in Newport walking up and down Thames Street and relaxing at Brenton Point.

Narragansett/Newport: Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July!

Lately, I have been going to the beach in the morning, then seeing friends in Newport during the afternoon. Almost every night has ended with either a frozen yogurt from Beluga or ice cream from Brickley's-- #rhodeislandliving.

My boyfriend came to visit from Boston last night and we went to the fireworks display at Narragansett Beach. I uploaded a video of the fireworks, but managed to take a video of the dullest part of the show. I promise it was cooler than it seems.

Today, we went to the beach late morning with the family, stopped by Monahan's for clam cakes, and head out to Newport for dinner and dessert. We took a short walk on the Cliff Walk, then caught a pedicab to get to the Brick Alley Pub. Our driver, a URI senior film major, invited us to be part of his documentary. All we had to do was answer the question:

"What is your definition of love?"

I am not going to say my answer, but there is a thought-provoking question for you to think on.

My boyfriend had to go back to Boston today, but we had a great Fourth of July.

I work at Beluga froyo and my friend is the manage at Orange Leaf froyo. Partisanship at its finest: #froyolove.
Massive thunderstorm in Newport. My friend and I got caught in the rain, so...
We ran from the shops on Thames to Rhino Bar. My friend ordered a grilled cheese made with Texas toast and I ordered chowder.  Rhino Bar recently added a clubbing space adjacent from the bar and revved up the food menu. Definitely worth checking out.
