Find of the Week | 39

Chokers are not as scary as you think they are.

Once upon a time in the 1990s, I had a harmless purple, jelly plastic choker from Limited Too that I got in a birthday party favor bag. It was one of the first pieces of jewelry I wore on a regular basis.

Fast forward from elementary school to post-college life—chokers have reappeared in my life in black lace, cognac suede, with charms, without charms...

They've definitely evolved into a much sexier accessory than purple jelly plastic.

Chokers do not necessarily need to be exclusively worn after-hours—keep it casual with a t-shirt dress or a flannel button-down with shorts.

Love the chokers and the clothes in this post? Check out Alegre in downtown Westport!

Find of the Week | 38

My friends texted me on Friday afternoon to let me know we were going out in Stamford.

Naturally, this meant that I needed a new top from work

I ended up choosing the Suzette cage front bandeau in cobalt blue. The nice thing about being petite is that a "layering piece" that would normally be way too cropped on an average height girl can suffice for a smaller frame.

The bandeau looks purple in the photo, but it's cobalt blue

I wore the bandeau again, but as a layering piece with my red and white plaid flannel shirt that I also bought from Alegre. Definitely a fun way to update the classic flannel for summer!

Find of the Week | 36

I constantly shop at work.

This comes as no surprise, considering I work at a boutique with merchandise that's both adorable and reasonably priced in the middle of Westport.

I bought a few things before I ran to Newport...

While I was in Rhode Island, I stopped by Crosswynds Traders in Narragansett. Not only did I pick up two much-needed shirts for my boyfriend—you don't even know—I also found this adorable crochet crop top for $10...

Cheers to wardrobe building!

Tusk & Cup Opens New Location in Wilton

Don't be surprised if the long line at Starbucks in Wilton begins to cut down—Ridgefield-based coffee shop Tusk & Cup has set up shop down the street!

Among many other advantages, Tusk & Cup is dedicated to providing amazing coffee and customer service. As someone who eats Starbucks' spinach feta wraps way more than I'd like to admit, the freshly prepared egg white florentine wrap at Tusk & Cup supremely lords over its corporate counterpart.

Not to mention sipping on the perfect mint mocha latte feels like an absolute luxury...

Every detail that makes Tusk & Cup special contributes to the shop's overall fun, accessible and positive image. It could have been very easy for a coffee shop in Fairfield County to become unyieldingly pretentious, but Tusk & Cup continues to keep their cool. Above all, it embodies the spirit of community, something that's highly valued among Wilton Warriors.

I prefer Wilton's layout over the one in Ridgefield. I'm not sure if they have the same square footage, but for whatever reason, it feels more comfortable.

This may have to do with the fact that there is more seating that can be used for both the workaholics sitting with their arsenal of electronics and the lacrosse moms chatting about which impressive college their son or daughter will attend in the fall.

Honestly, I still go to Starbucks least once a day when I go to work—it's typically faster and less expensive, especially if you regularly reap gold membership benefits—but it's important to support your local businesses when you can.

When you support local business, you support your community.
When you support your community, you help build a better and happier place to live.
...

Long story short, do what you can to make the world a better place to grow into something even more beautiful.
...

So basically just buy the delicious $5 latte handcrafted with Italian coffee beans and feel the amore.

Cadeaux du Monde's 29th Annual UNICEF Campaign

Since its 29 years in business, Cadeaux du Monde has held a special fundraising campaign for UNICEF every October.

Based in Newport, Rhode Island, the award-winning online gallery features a vast collection of international folk art that is also Fair Trade and environmentally conscious. Owner Katie Dyer is proud to say she has incorporated social responsibility in her business plan for Cadeaux du Monde since Day 1.

Although Dyer does still give to other charities, she decided to devote her business's charity efforts towards UNICEF for professional and personal reasons.

Before Dyer launched her business, she served in the Peace Corps in Central Africa where a large population of people were affected by polio. She taught children in a school, many of whom were polio victims.

"One of my students was a polio victim and works at the airport—he’s a meterologist at the airport—but if he hadn’t been smart and gone to school and had the support of his parents, he probably wouldn’t be able to do anything but beg, because he’s got a completely withered leg, so he can’t be a subsistence farmer or do other jobs."

UNICEF also focuses on providing emergency relief, refugee support, clean water and education. Dyer points out that all of the initiatives are about increasing child survival in developing countries that do not have the same support as seen in Western countries.

By giving to a larger organization like UNICEF, it's possible to make a real difference.

"They’ve got the infrastructure and can cope with the issues where there’s political instability, conflict issue or environmental disaster issue. They’ve got enough skill sets and broad enough support base that they can be there. And sometimes people don’t realize that."

© UNICEF/NYHQ2013-0287/Matas

"I specifically decided to chose a bigger organization like UNICEF because I thought that if you give $5, $500, or $5,000 it has an impact and a direct impact."

You can donate your pocketchange and still make an impact. Dyer has worked with many local businesses to have countertop collection boxes through the month. Keep in mind that anything helps and pocket change adds up—it just take pennies can help children get vaccinated.

"If the children can’t survive and can’t thrive, what else is there?"

To donate to this year's fundraising campaign contact CADEAUX du MONDE at (401)935-8591 or email info@cadeauxdumonde.com. Learn more about Cadeaux du Monde's work with UNICEF, read more here or on their website.

CRU Cafe Grand Opening

Formerly Katrina's Bakery, Russell Morin Catering & Events recently opened CRU Cafe Newport in the Casino Terrace plaza.

The new cafe has a clean, contemporary style that a lot of visitors from New York City, Boston and other cities will definitely feel comfortable in. The cafe will serve a different menu each week created by Chef Brandon Teachout based on the season and what's locally available.

“We have taken inspiration from our travels to catering events around the nation, as well as the abundance of fresh, local ingredients to develop a unique addition to the Newport community,” said owner Russell Morin in an interview with The Newport Patch

CRU Cafe will post their menu regularly on their Facebook page—with everything reasonably priced at $10 or under, CRU Cafe may easily become a favorite spot for both locals and tourists.

Find of the Week | 26

I stopped into Maison DNA last weekend to check out their winter sale and found this vintage wallet and matching key guard.

At first look, I saw that there were labels still in the wallet and unconsciously ripped them out. Upon a few minutes of reflection, I regretted removing a piece of its history, so I stuck the labels in one of the wallet's pockets.

I think the real find wasn't the actual wallet and key guard, but looking back in time and seeing the old-fashioned labels...

Chateau & Bungalow

Last week, I went to a Green Drinks networking event for the Aquidneck Land Trust at a lifestyle and home boutique called Chateau & Bungalow. It's the perfect place to buy Christmas gifts for your friends who love entertaining and design.

Chateau & Bungalow also has a collection of vintage designer consignment... I'm pretty sure these Christian Louboutins are my size, but I am too afraid to try them on because I know I'll buy them if they fit...

SoNo Baking Company

When I go to Connecticut to catch up with my girlfriends, one of the things we love to do is go to South Norwalk, appropriately nicknamed SoNo for being an hour away from Manhattan.

We ended up doing brunch at the SoNo Baking Company, a local treasure situated away from the town's main drag.

The SoNo Baking Company, a bakery and gourmet café, was founded by one of Martha Stewart's colleagues. Everything is made fresh and tastes fresh--I would recommend the SoNo Benedict for brunch with local tea.
