2 Months Later | Snapchat Stories vs. Instagram Stories

An evaluation of Instagram's Story feature over sixty days later

When Instagram stories were initially released, people were thrilled. Users could connect with their favorite bloggers, photographers, artists, etc. on a continuous stream throughout the day and allowed a more behind-the-scenes look at the photos being shared...

But people were also very confused—why is Instagram making stories when Snapchat already has that covered? Is Snapchat going to survive? Will Snapchat die?

After seeing how influencers and brands have adapted to Instagram's Story feature, I think Instagram and Snapchat will be able to coexist just fine. So many bloggers and celebrities were posting so much content on both Snapchat and Instagram over the course of Fashion Month, yet it didn't feel like oversharing.

No app is going to die—there's enough room in the digital marketplace for both.

On Snapchat, I have 60ish friends. Most of them are actually friends in real life, then the rest of them are a handful of brands and celebrities that I love.  A lot of my posts are more personal and meant for my friends, typically people who I went to high school or college with who know more personal details of my life, my sense of humor... Anyone who I accept as a friend on Snapchat is someone I trust enough to not badmouth my after-hours shenanigans in a professional setting.

On Instagram, I have 500ish followers and follow over 777 accounts. I've had my Instagram account for five years and amassed followers who are style bloggers, boutiques, digital PR houses, as well as friends. There's a good fraction of followers who are also local brands or businesses from places I have visited. My Instagram account is still personal, but it is definitely curated more carefully than my Snapchat. I treat Instagram more as an artistic portfolio, an extension of my aesthetic and an industry research tool.

If I were to break down the main difference between Snapchat and Instagram, I would argue that Snapchat relies on cultivating a more playful, more honest interaction and Instagram is a more creative, constructed display. The "story" feature on each platform simply magnifies its respective message.

The News feature on Snapchat reduces risk of being rendered obsolete, because it elevates the users' experience by providing information from news outlets or digital brands—if anything, that impedes the users' likelihood of hopping onto Facebook or Twitter to scroll through a ranked feed.

It's possible that one could post the same content on both Snapchat and Instagram—or even could ditch one for the other completely—but where's the fun in that?

Find of the Week | 41

I refuse to believe summer is over.

It's not that I had a horrible summer. Not at all. In fact, my summer was fantastic—I traveled to California for the first time and explored San Francisco, Monterey, Big Sur and Napa Valley; spent time with family at Watch Hill; and reconnected with friends in Connecticut and New York City.

I'm hoping to squeeze in one more weekend in Rhode Island before embracing autumn, so I took advantage of end-of-summer sales in Westport to get ready.

I stopped at Jack Wills to buy a dress to see a Newport Polo match this Saturday—it has a perfect fitted bodice with a feminine, flared skirt. The oar tote was admittedly an impulse buy, but it's not like I won't ever use it...

The Americana tank top was a bargain buy from Winged Monkey that will be of use next Fourth of July or USA-themed party.

Since I was feeling very New England, I finished my shopping spree at Barnes & Noble and picked up The Starboard Sea by Amber Dermont. I strayed from my usual non-fiction picks for something to help me cope with my summertime sadness...

Find of the Week | 40

Because effort is sexy

I had an hour to find a graphic tank top or t-shirt that was either champagne-related or incredibly nautical for a date the following evening. I quickly circled the Danbury Fair Mall several times before it closed—walked in and out of ten stores—only to choose a tank top that's completely unrelated to bubbly.

After all of hustle, I ended up wearing the long, white knit cardigan I bought somewhat impulsively during my search. It's just as well I didn't wear the tank top on a date, but it's still cute to have around.

And who needs an airplane when you can watch the sunset on a yacht...

Snowpocalypse 2014

It really has been snowing a lot lately and it's these moments that remind us of how precious a New England summer can be. Driving to Newport for work this morning was out of the question, so I worked from home and tried to relax...
Light reading before working

There was no way I leaving the house today...

The crackers are English/American, but it was a good spread and the first time I had brie since coming back from Paris--it certainly won't be the last.

"Take Me Home" Cash Cash feat. Bebe Rexha

"Take Me Home" is my latest song obsession, I've replayed it an unhealthy amount of times and will continue to do so until another song comes along...

Hoboken: Easter Brunch at Madison's

Happy Easter! My family and I celebrated Easter at The Madison Bar & Grill in Hoboken. It may have been buffet-style, but this was not Country Kitchen buffet--this was probably the classiest (and most delicious) buffet I have ever had!

Mini croissant, mini pain au chocolat, smoked salmon with capers, house salad, tilapia, eggs benedict with ham, flatbread pizza

Chocolate covered strawberries and assorted fudge

Hope you had a great holiday!

NGT/WKD: Catarina's and Tropical Gangstilettos

Spring break is coming to a close, but I've been able to work, intern, sleep, and above all, shop.

After work on Friday, I stopped by Tropical Gangstilettos on Thames Street to check out their sale on winter boots. I scored these beautiful brown knee-high riding boots for $22.50:

My oldest brother Dylan came home to visit for the weekend. We filled up on a delicious Italian dinner at Catarina's on Friday and then we made a nice breakfast at home this morning before he had to return back to Hoboken.

Tomorrow I'll be interning, then heading straight to the French Film Festival opening at Jane Pickens Theatre--it should be a fun night.

NPT/NGT/WKD: Social Media Has Consumed My Life

I have realized that social media is my life.

I run Facebook and Twitter for several organizations at the university.
I contribute to the Facebook and Twitter pages at internship.
I started a new blog for class, Macaron Hoarder, dedicated to my desperate Francophile adventures.
And, of course, I have this blog, Penser, which has been neglected for the past week.

The grand total? 7 Facebook pages. 3 Twitter accounts. 2 blogs.

Now that spring break has finally arrived, I plan on watching Mad Men and Girls when I'm not at work or internship...or managing all of the other Facebook/Twitter pages.

Here's my past week in Instagram photos:

Newport/Narragansett/Wickford: The Other Snowstorm

This weekend was fantastic--probably one of the best weekends I've had this year.

On Saturday night, I got my hair done (see previous post) and spent the night with friends in Newport.

The next day, I drove back to Narragansett early in the morning during the blizzard (an adventure in itself) and went to internship for the rest of the day.

At least I wasn't texting or tweeting while driving...

I stopped by Dunkin Donuts on the way home-- at roughly $23, this is probably one of the most expensive Dunkin orders ever made.

Snowed in at Gossip!

It was surprisingly busy on Sunday, considering the condition of the roads and it being dead of winter. We did have a few sales, but for the most part, I kept up Gossip's social media pages and worked on table displays.

Main Street in Wickford

I spent the President's Day holiday staying at home with cafe mochas, green teas, and Superleaf aloe drinks. Off to class tomorrow.

Narragansett/Newport/Wickford/Wilton: Post-Nemo and More

Narragansett lost power during the blizzard last Friday. After spending an uncomfortable winter night in Rhode Island, my family and I went back to Connecticut for the day. The car trip, which typically takes 2 hours, was nearly 4.5-5 hours long. The rest stop alone took nearly 45 minutes, because Subway was the only food chain open.

Nemo, Day 1

Nemo, Day 2

The university was closed Monday, as well as last Friday, so everybody is fairly disoriented. All of my work has piled up and it's gotten a little overwhelming.

On Tuesday, I stayed late at Gossip for a community event co-sponsored by the I Love Wickford Association and the Wickford Art Association. Each store in Wickford center showcased one piece of artwork by a local artist--Gossip showcased "She's Got It" by Sarah Tallarico.

Date night

Yet, in the midst of all the craziness, I was able to get my hair cut today at JF3 Salon in Newport--I donated a foot of hair. I have donated my hair several times before, but I can't seem to remember if this was the fifth, sixth, or seventh time I've donated it.

Superstorm Nemo has really thrown me even more off track than I was before. Hopefully I'll be better organized and energized after the long weekend.

Wickford/Narragansett: Internship, Day 2

I am able to intern at Gossip on weekends, which allows me to still find time to balance studying for class and work at the Pell Center. Today was not busy--off-season is always a challenge for coastal areas that depend on tourists and/or good weather--but I still found things to do to keep busy, like updating profile pictures and cover photos on the boutique's Facebook and Twitter.

It's only the second day I have been interning, but I can't imagine being in a better place to get acclimated to fashion retail.

This "outfit of the day" features how you can wear these Free People jeans in the winter and for the spring.

It was such a joy to see Emma and Bella this morning! They look very alike, considering Emma is a month older.

Newport/Narragansett: Spring Semester 2013

I plan on being crazier and busier this semester than last--I never thought that would be possible.

Here's the plan:

1. Overloaded course load (courses subject to change)
  • French Conversation
  • Introduction to Microeconomics
  • Global Media
  • Morality & Politics
  • Issues in New Media
  • Professional Internship in Business (course)
2. Internship with Gossip Wickford (starting Thursday!)

4. Member of the SRyou Exposition Planning Board

5. Participant in Multicultural Week (most likely as a model in the multicultural fashion show)

6. Remembering to breathe.

In some perverse way, I enjoy being this busy--being bored is never a good option.

Today's Outfit: Sweater Jacket, H&M; Shirt, Old Navy; Jeans, Gap; Boots, LUV

Newport/Narragansett: Chanel Chanel and Girls

My brother joined me on some errand running in Newport--buying textbooks at the university bookstore, checking out a Chanel Chanel at the university library, then ending at Starbucks. I was so ready to go to Jack Wills--last time, seriously!--but it was closed or inventory. I guess I'll have to go again tomorrow...

I did enjoy watching Chanel Chanel, which is a television documentary originally aired on the Arts and Entertainment Network, according to a review by The New York Times. Despite the fact it was made in the late 1980s, it was nice to get the facts straight about Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel without the cinematic embellishment. A young Karl Lagerfeld, before the leather gloves and white hair, gave great insights about Chanel and her personality through examining her designs.

Tonight is the night I finally joined the Girls bandwagon--and I could not be happier that I did. Now I understand why Director/Creator/Writer Lena Dunham of Girls deserves such acclaim and Golden Globe nominations and awards. Absolute perfection.

Watch it on HBO Go NOW!

Narragansett: Stay-At-Home Funday Monday

I have been enjoying a few "stay-at-home fundays" and I am not about to complain about it. I did leave the house for a little bit to run small errands--getting the February 2013 issue of InStyle and a Starbucks--but there's only one more week to take advantage of the repose.

My spring semester internship at Gossip in Wickford is in the process of being finalized and I can't wait to get started!

I'm almost done with the Masters of Style documentary series--I watched the episodes on Jean Paul Gaultier and Valentino today.
