A Gilded Weekend in Newport

I pulled out all of the stops for Salve Regina University's 40th Annual Governor's Ball

Staying in style

Since I have never needed to stay at a hotel in Newport before, I wanted to pick the perfect place.

Earlier this fall, Jess Kirby of Prosecco & Plaid wrote a blog post on her trip to Camden, Maine and she mentioned how she stayed at the Whitehall Inn. I remembered that she had tagged Lark Hotels on one of her Instagram photos from the trip. A few link clicks later, I found out that the hotel group has properties in New England and California, including Gilded in Newport.

A stylish boutique hotel style steps away from Bellevue Avenue fit exactly what I had in mind—it didn't take me long to book my hotel room.

The room I stayed in was located on the first floor by the front desk. I was concerned that I might hear everything and everyone, but it was great—I loved how the smell of freshly baked pastries woke me up in the morning.

Quick Change

I decided to buy different shoes and accessories to go with my dress because I was afraid of being underdressed. I went back to Wish Consignment and bought heels, earrings and a necklace, all of which fortuitously happen to be J. Crew.

Do it up

I ran to Apothecary Newport for a much-needed brow design before making my way to JF3 Salon for my updo. The jewelry I bought at Wish made me second-guess myself about whether I should 1) wear both the necklace and the earrings and 2) style my hair all the way up or half up, half down...

So this is the end result.

Party time

The evening kicked off with a special reception for alumni, parents and friends in McAuley Hall. Everyone enjoyed drinks and hors d'oeuvres sponsored by local restaurants and vendors before Ochre Court opened for the ball.  When we arrived, I didn't realize that alumni were seated on the second floor of Ochre Court overlooking the Great Hall—it was a glamorous perch for sipping champagne and people watching.

I'm slightly surprised that I didn't take any photos throughout the night, but I'm happier to have spent a distraction-free evening chatting with friends and alumni. Governor's Ball is now my new holiday tradition that I hope to share with everyone who wants to spend a wonderful winter weekend in Newport.

Until then...

Find of the Week | 44

I've been treating the fashion and beauty preparation for my alma mater's winter gala like my term papers—elegantly presented, but barely finished in time for the deadline.

I had three specific goals in mind while shopping—I needed to find a white dress, wanted to buy locally in Newport as much as possible and somehow stay within a reasonable budget.

By nothing short of a miracle, I was able to find most of my outfit.

I found a full-length, champagne J.Crew formal gown at Wish Consignment, gilded gold earrings at Kristina Richards and a gold Haarstick ring at Chateau & Bungalow. This is definitely one of my more glorious shopping moments—not only did I spend less than $100 on the outfit, but it also took less than an hour to shop.

With less than two weeks until Salve Regina University's 40th Annual Governor's Ball, I am officially ready to go!

Find of the Week | 42

Fall is here, which means it's time for denim, sweaters and boots!

The temperatures haven't dropped low enough to break out shearling-lined footwear, but damp weather means taking out the Hunter boots. I went to Chou Chou in Wilton to get a black, matte pair—I even bought shearling in-soles to make them extra cozy.

I forgot to feature this bag months ago, but it's a vintage Coach crossbody I bought at Wish Consignment in Newport.

Christmas 2012

Merry Christmas--we made it.

I am happy to say Santa spoiled me once again, but for the first time in a long while, not so much with clothes. My parents did a great job surprising me this year and I am all the more grateful for it. Here were some of the gifts under the tree:

Dell XPS 10 Tablet--I really did not see this coming. This will be so great to read The New York Times in the morning with coffee, bring with me to class or do interviews. All I need is a case and I'm good to go.

Greylin Ivory Sequin Embellished Marcela Tank Top available at Une Minette--Out of the blue, I was able to see my boyfriend Christmas day and we were able to exchange gifts--as you can guess, this is my Christmas gift from him. I can't wait to dress it up, down, and wear it all of the time with a cardigan.

It has been a different Christmas this year since Theodora passed, but we will always keep her in our thoughts. Because of her, we have learned to make time for what matters and cherish it.

Now it's time to try to take a positive step forward towards the New Year as we reflect and remember on 2012...

Newport/Narragansett: More Holiday Shopping and Fair Trade Tuesday

Before my usual Starbucks run and work, I went to Wish Newport just to browse, but of course, my detour ended with a small purchase. Wish Newport, which sells designer women's consignment, also sells young children's designer consignment for babies and toddlers. My cousin is expecting her second son in mid January, so I picked up two Ralph Lauren onesies for only $12.00. Now that's a bargain.

After that successful steal, I want to go back and buy some more things for my cousin's eldest son, who is currently 15 months old.

On Facebook, Newport Mercury posted that they needed someone to do a bow-making demonstration for an elaborate big bow. To be completely honest, I think it would be more useful if they covered an article about how to wrap gifts, because there are some atrocious gift wrappers out there who can barely tape the wrapping paper together, let alone make a bow. I sent the paper an email that I would be glad to help. Regardless of whether or not they respond, I think it would be a good idea to do How-Tos on gift wrapping.

The Fair Trade fashion assignment is going well so far. I have one more interview tomorrow, but after that, I just need to do some research and write the draft for early December.

In fact, one of my interviewees, Ms. Renee Bowers of the Fair Trade Federation, says that tomorrow is Fair Trade Tuesday! In response to the other shopping holidays after Thanksgiving, I think it is a great way to encourage the public to buy Fair Trade for holiday gifts.

Fair Trade Tuesday, created by Global Goods Partners, supports by Fair Trade organizations across the nation:

Fair Tuesday (hashtag #FairTuesday) is an initiative created in response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The goal of #FairTuesday is to inspire conscious consumerism and show how an everyday purchase can change lives in a whole community. We are featuring fair trade, ethical, and eco-friendly brands and inviting other businesses to take a step towards sustainability.

In the future, I hope Small Business Saturday and Fair Trade Tuesday gain a higher following around the holidays and year-round.

Newport/Narragansett: Sweaters on Sweaters on Sweaters, PGC 2012 Days 9-12

In case you haven't noticed already, it's getting cold. It's hard to believe last week I wore sandals--now I'm thinking about pulling out my trapper hat for Boston tomorrow.

Tuesday's challenge focused on the benefits of gardening. One component of PGC 2012 Day 9 required to take a picture of a community garden--I chose to photograph my university's vegetable garden. The dining services and students take care of it, which is great because it's an effort on both fronts to make the university meet its sustainability goals. Another component of the challenge was to plant an organic seed. When I got home that night, I ate an apple, took the seeds out of the core, got a cup, ran outside, quickly scooped up some soil in the dark, went back inside, then put the seeds in the cup. It will be a miracle if anything grows.

Tuesday's Outfit: Sweater, aerie; Jeans, Express; Vest, Gap; Scarf, BCBG Max Azria; Boots, Coach; Earrings (from Trendz)

Let's hope this guy survives!

Wednesday was a bit of a whirlwind. Work study kept me busy, updating information and a few Powerpoint presentations. I do not remember much else except completing PGC 2012 Day 10 on Zero Waste and learning I won a "Greener" level prize for my entry on PGC 2012 Day 8, Meatless Monday--that was the highlight of my day.
Wednesday's Outfit: Sweater, Juicy Couture; Top, Gap; Pants, Gap; Boots, (from Tropical Gangsters)

I had to take a picture of single-use items I use on a daily basis then find reusable alternatives for them

I don't really remember what I did yesterday either, everything is such a blur--wake up, get dressed, drive to Newport, and get to class. And PGC 2012 Day 11, of course, which focused on voicing awareness about a social issue. It also had a component which required a video or written submission about an important woman in your life. I tried a video for this challenge and posted it on Teens Turning Green's Facebook page. I'm so much more awkward than I want to be. The highlight of the day was when I got Starbucks and received a free drink coupon, because when I asked for a Pumpkin Spice Latte, the barista said they were out of the flavor.
Thursday's Outfit: Blazer, Forever 21; Scarf, vintage; Jeans, Gap; Flats, Nomad

One of my favorite stores in Newport
This week I realized how much the Project Green Challenge has gotten me thinking more deeply about sustainable living. Today's challenge, PGC 2012 Day 12, was on packaged foods. I know some of the labels and ingredients to be wary of when buying packaged food, but I was surprised to find that labels I thought would be more regulated, such as gluten-free or grass-fed, were not.

Tomorrow, I'm going on a trip to Boston to see the New England Aquarium. My boyfriend and I are meeting up, too, so I'm looking forward to spending the day with him.

Today's Outfit: Leather Jacket, New York & Company; Scarf, ESpirit; Jeans, Express; Boots, Mudd; LV tote (from Wish Newport)

Newport/Narragansett: Tea Time and Meatless Monday, PGC 2012 Days 6-8

I got sick over this long weekend, but there was still plenty to be done.

On Saturday, my parents and I went to the beach for an hour. No bikinis and swim trunks, but it was still a nice day to soak up some sun. Yoga was the theme for PGC 2012: Day 6. I had to take a picture of myself doing yoga (awkward) and wrote a reflection on the first week of PGC 2012 so far.

Saturday's Outfit: T Shirt, Gap; Sweater, Old Navy; Jeans, J Brand; Belt, vintage; Sandals, Steve Madden

Sunday, my parents and I checked out the Wrentham Outlets. It was so crowded--there were license plates from everywhere, from Nova Scotia to Rhode Island. Style was the theme for PGC 2012: Day 7. The challenge required picking out an item of clothing in the closet and find a greener version of it online. I enjoyed the part of the challenge that required making three eco-friendly and sustainable looks on Pinterest, but it took so long. Check out all three of my looks here: Look 1, Look 2, and Look 3.

I chose to research my Sadimara by Colette Mordo cardigan I bought from Wish Newport last fall
Sunday's Outfit: Coat, Express; Cardigan, Sadimara by Colette Mordo; Leggings, Gap;  Bag, Call It Spring; Boots; Mudd
Today, I went to Newport and met with my professor at Starbucks to brainstorm the topic of my final paper. I would like to explore consumerism and department stores and how consumerism may or may not have changed from 19th century Paris till today. On the way out, I ran into my roommate from Oxford and we caught up over tea and cookies.

Meatless Monday was the theme for today, PGC 2012: Day 8. It involved analyzing why going meatless for at least one day of the week is better for human health and the environment. Part of the challenge involved signing up for the Environmental Working Group (EWG) pledge to eat less meat and create a virtual vegetarian/vegan meal. I did sign up for The Pledge--it helps that I don't eat meat that much in the first place. If anything, what would impact me more was if I signed a pledge to eat less cheese and cheese products. That would be incredibly trying. Check out my virtual vegetarian meal I made on Pinterest using local farms--I would like to try and make it at some point.

Today's Outfit: Vest, Gap; Tunic; Gap; Scarf, (knit by Mom); Leggings, Gap; Boots, LUV
The Project Green Challenge 2012 has been going really well, I've managed to stay on top of all the challenges and completing at least the first two levels, "green" and "greener." However, there are two things I struggle with:

1. The more the challenge goes on, the more time consuming PGC 2012 becomes. I want to participate in this initiative with my full support, but I feel like this challenge could be more considerate of people's time. I understand that education is a central part of PGC 2012 and research should be conducted about specific practices and movements associated with green living. I understand that, because I already live a more eco-friendly lifestyle than the average person. But with an overloaded schedule of university commitments, to have questions and assignments that are very time consuming make it difficult to keep doing the PGC 2012.

2. I took some environmental courses before PGC 2012, so the basic lessons are not new to me. The environmental courses I have taken include Humans and the Environment and Christianity, Ethics, and the Environment. I have already done extensive research about my community and my university regarding sustainability. Had I not known anything about green living, all of this information would be fresh and exciting. Continuing this learning process is still exciting, but I found out I am more educated in the environment than I thought.

All of that in mind, I fully support the positive intentions and actions The Project Green Challenge 2012 is putting out there. Educating young generations about sustainable living is crucial to building a better world, a better community, and a better sense of self.

Study Abroad in Oxford, England

I am at university in England for a month at St. Clare's University! Located in Oxford, England, it is a charming city an hour and a half north of London.  Even though I packed for cold, rainy England weather, the first day was nearly 75 degrees Fahrenheit...

Before I arrived, I did take a few pictures of what I packed. You will notice that most of the clothes are neutrals (mainly grey and black) and sweaters (pullovers, not cardigans) because I did not want to deal with the fuss of coordinating color.

There are plenty of fine restaurants, shops, and sights around the area to check out, so I may have to go shopping downtown more than originally planned if this weather keeps up and look for more summery clothes.

Three scarves
One rain jacket
One leather jacket

(from top left) Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh; Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by C.S. Lewis; Henry V by William Shakespeare; and Jude the Obscure by Thomas Hardy
Three miniature London-themed journals

One tote bag/book bag
One pencil pouch
Reading glasses
Make up bags

Three cardigans
Three pullovers

One grey knit pullover
One wool cardigan
One green striped sweater

Three pairs of jeans
Two pairs of cotton pants

Tunics
T shirts
Yoga pants

One-shoulder dress by Wish

Grey butterfly sleeve dress by Collective Concepts (from Wish Consignment)

Black cocktail dress

I also packed by black Coach rainboots and new Ralph Lauren metallic loafers. I did pack more than that, of course, but I don't think showing pictures of socks and toiletries may be of interest. Let's hope it gets a little cooler so I can wear my sweaters!

Find of the Week | 4

There was a book sale at the Newport Public Library—$4 for everything you bought if you can fill a plastic bag.

You bet I filled that bag like you wouldn't believe! I missed the trolley going downtown, so I decided to walk to the library. I took some pictures of the clock on Victoria, the fleur de lis gate, and of course, all of my finds at the book sale.

Three Cups of Tea, retail $15.00; Little Bee, retail $14.00

The Red Thread, retail $23.95

A signed copy of The Red Thread by Ann Hood

Saffron Skies, retail $11.00; The Loveliest Woman in America, retail $26.95
If you can't tell, I am still forever obsessed with instagram :)

New Rules, retail $24.95; Into the Wild, retail $14.95

All of that for $4. Insane, right?

It would not be a trip downtown without paying a visit to Wish, a great consignment boutique on William Street. This Big Buddha mini bag was super and only $10--I used my consignor credit so I did not even have to pull out my wallet!

Big Buddha faux leather clutch, estimated retail $59.00
