Emma Watson HeForShe Speech at the United Nations

Earlier this week, actress and activist Emma Watson gave a powerful speech at the United Nations about eliminating gender inequality and building a more balanced relationship between men and women.

The more I’ve spoken about feminism, the more I have realized that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating. If there is one thing I know for certain, it is that this has to stop.

For the record, feminism, by definition, is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the theory of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes.

The movement Watson is endorsing, HeForShe, is "a campaign led by UN Women in which men all over the world are being encouraged to speak out against the inequalities faced by women and girls."

Watson acknowledges that as important as it is to have women express their desire for change, the movement needs to be extended to actively include men in not only improving the status of women, but also the status of themselves. Men, like women, have been subjected to act a certain way or show their feelings in a different way, because of the societal expectations to follow a certain behavior.

By getting inviting both sexes to the conversation about solving gender inequality, more can be done to improve the quality of life for all.
