Reading Aloud: Strength in What Remains

Strength in What Remains (2009)
Written by Tracy Kidder

Once again, Tracy Kidder continues to prove himself a artful messenger. This go round, he writes about Deo, a Burundian who escaped the genocide that took place in Burundi and Rwanda during the mid 90s. He comes to America with barely enough to survive in New York. The kindness from complete strangers helps Deo complete his aspirations to finish his medical training. In the end, Deo learns what it means to be a Burundian American and seek answers to settle his troubled past.

Written by Tracey Kidder

If you haven't read Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracey Kidder, you should.

This is the story of Dr. Paul Farmer, one doctor who set a revolution in motion for the improvement of health care in the darkest corners of human society. The places the average American does not hear about because the authorities don't want us to see it. With the help of an extraordinary team dedicated to Farmer's cause, they bring light to the most impoverished cities run rampant with TB-- Lima,Peru; Siberia, Russia; and of course, the village of Cange in Haiti. The author, Kidder, chronicles Farmer's journey to change the world and to help patients everywhere.
